Its name means “wolverine”, while KTO stands for Kołowy Transporter Opancerzony, meaning wheeled armoured personnel carrier. Selected by Poland in 2002, the vehicle entered service during the following years as part of the modernisation of its mechanised forces.

The Rosomak family includes troop-carrying, combat and specialist support variants. Polish deployments to Afghanistan brought the vehicle to wider attention and helped shape adaptations to protection and operational equipment.
