It offers a distinctive support-tank subject alongside the more familiar gun-armed Shermans in a WWII armour collection.

Historical background

The 105 mm howitzer-armed Sherman was developed to provide close fire support, particularly against infantry positions, fortifications and other targets best engaged with high-explosive ammunition. Its role complemented the standard gun tanks rather than making it a dedicated tank destroyer.

HVSS stands for Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension. This later suspension arrangement accommodated wider tracks, helping spread the tank's weight and improve its mobility on soft ground. Together, the howitzer and revised running gear give this Sherman a recognisable combination of features.

A model of this support variant can add variety to an Allied armour display or form the focus of a compact diorama. Dust on the running gear and restrained wear on exposed edges can help suggest a working vehicle without hiding its distinctive shape.

Model details

Manufacturer: UM Models (UniModel)

Scale: 1/72

Subject: M4(105) HVSS Sherman medium tank

Armament represented: 105 mm howitzer

Kit number: 375

Model kit requiring assembly and painting.
