It offers a distinctive subject for a WWII aviation collection or a reference-led airfield scene.

Historical background

The Bf 109 was a mainstay of the Luftwaffe's fighter force throughout the Second World War. The G-series, widely known as the Gustav, developed the design further, and the G-6 entered service in 1943. Its heavier 13 mm machine guns above the engine required prominent cowling bulges, giving this version one of its recognisable features.

The R3 designation identified provision for a ventral drop tank, extending the fighter's operational reach. Tropical equipment included measures such as an intake filter to reduce the effects of dust on the engine. These features make the subject useful for exploring how aircraft were adapted to different operating conditions.

On the workbench, the compact airframe rewards careful camouflage painting and restrained weathering. A dusty airfield base can complement the tropical theme, but use the supplied markings and historical references to choose an appropriate unit, location and period.

Model details

Manufacturer: UM Models (UniModel)

Scale: 1/72

Subject: Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6/R3/Trop fighter

Historical operator: German Luftwaffe

Kit number: 416

Model kit requiring assembly and painting.
