The F4F-4 was the Wildcat that held the line. Outclimbed and outturned by the A6M Zero, it survived on ruggedness, firepower and tactics, and its folding wings let carriers pack in far more aircraft than before. Wildcat pilots flew it through Midway, Guadalcanal and the long grind of 1942, buying the time the Navy needed for the Hellcat to arrive.
Outflown on paper, unbeaten in practice.
