Matchbox, originally founded in 1953 by Leslie Smith and Rodney Smith in London, became famous for its die-cast toy cars before entering the plastic model kit market in the 1970s. The company launched its plastic kit division around 1973, producing affordable scale models primarily in 1/72 and 1/76 scales.

Matchbox kits covered diverse subjects including aircraft, ships, military vehicles, and cars, marketed as budget-friendly alternatives to established brands like Airfix. The kits were characterized by simple construction, modest detail, and accessibility for younger or beginner modelers. While not as refined as premium manufacturers, Matchbox offered good value and variety.

The company changed ownership several times, with Lesney Products (Matchbox's parent company) experiencing financial difficulties in the 1980s. Various manufacturers eventually acquired Matchbox molds, with Revell obtaining many tools. Some classic Matchbox kits occasionally reappear under different brand names.

Though no longer producing new plastic kits, Matchbox's legacy remains as an entry point for countless modelers during the hobby's golden era.
