The de Havilland Mosquito was perhaps the most versatile aircraft of the Second World War — a twin-engine, two-seat design built primarily of wood that flew faster than most single-engine fighters, outran almost every Luftwaffe interceptor sent after it, and performed effectively in more operational roles than any other aircraft of the conflict. The Mk.IX was a high-altitude photographic reconnaissance variant able to reach altitudes that contemporary fighters could not follow, while the NF.30 was a night fighter version fitted with AI Mk.X centimetric radar and uprated Merlin 76 engines for high-altitude interception of German night raiders. Both marks exemplify the Mosquito's defining characteristic: the ability to do something extraordinary in almost any role its crews needed.
