The Henschel Hs 126 was the Luftwaffe's primary short-range reconnaissance and artillery observation aircraft in the early years of the Second World War, serving in Poland, France, the Balkans, North Africa, and the Eastern Front. A high-wing parasol monoplane with fixed spatted undercarriage, it was designed for slow, stable flight at low altitude to allow accurate observation and photography over enemy lines. While it was already obsolescent by the time of the Battle of Britain, the Hs 126 continued in front-line service on less contested fronts until replaced by the Focke-Wulf Fw 189 — another reminder that the Luftwaffe's reach in the early war years stretched far beyond its more famous fighter and bomber types.
The Luftwaffe's eyes over every front — the overlooked Hs 126 reconnaissance workhorse.
