The Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm BK 117 was a joint German-Japanese twin-engine multipurpose helicopter developed through a collaboration between MBB and Kawasaki, first flying in 1979 and entering service in the early 1980s. With its twin turboshaft engines, fenestron-style tail, and wide cabin designed for rapid role changes, the BK 117 found wide adoption in air ambulance, police, offshore, and utility roles across Europe, Japan, and beyond. It formed the basis for the Eurocopter EC145 and its successors, making it one of the most influential helicopter designs of the late 20th century and a common sight in emergency medical service fleets worldwide to this day.

The workhorse helicopter that became a standard — the BK 117 in 1/72 scale.
