Explore one of early aviation’s most unconventional designs with the Avis 1/48 Lee-Richards Annular Monoplane-3. Instead of a conventional straight wing, this British experimental aircraft used an annular, or ring-shaped, lifting surface surrounding its slender fuselage. The result is a model with a silhouette quite unlike the usual fighters, trainers and touring aircraft.

Developed by Cedric Lee and G. Tilghman Richards, the annular monoplane series flew before the First World War. The third flying example incorporated further modifications and was used regularly until the outbreak of war in 1914. It represents a fascinating period when designers were still exploring radically different answers to the challenges of powered flight.

This 1/48 scale plastic kit offers an unusual centrepiece for a pioneering aviation collection. Its open structure, prominent bracing and curved wing make it particularly interesting viewed from above, where the distinctive layout is easiest to appreciate.
