Bring an unusual chapter of British civil aviation to your display with the Avis 1/72 Short S.4 Satellite “Parker’s Tin Kettle”. This plastic aircraft model kit depicts the distinctive little sporting monoplane built by Short Brothers in 1924, with its compact fuselage, open cockpit and broad cantilever wings.
The sole Satellite was developed for the Air Ministry’s two-seat light aeroplane competition at Lympne. Closely associated with Shorts’ chief test pilot, John Lankester Parker, it acquired the affectionate nickname “Parker’s Tin Kettle”. Its civil registration, G-EBJU, is shown on the kit’s box artwork.
For a collection dominated by fighters and bombers, the Satellite offers a refreshing change: a small interwar civilian aircraft with a character all its own. Display it alongside other early light aircraft to tell the story of Britain’s sporting aviation experiments between the wars.
