The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk is one of the most recognisable fighters of the Second World War, made famous above all by the shark-mouth nose art of the American Volunteer Group's Flying Tigers over China and Burma. The P-40E was the most capable early variant, with six wing-mounted .50 calibre machine guns and improved performance, serving with US Army Air Force units in North Africa, the Pacific, and beyond. Rugged, reliable, and outfought by the best Japanese and German fighters but a match for much of what it encountered, the P-40 was the mount of many of the early war's notable Allied aces.
