The Douglas SBD Dauntless is arguably the most consequential aircraft of the Pacific War. It was Dauntless dive bombers that sank four Japanese fleet carriers at the Battle of Midway in June 1942 — Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu — in the space of a single morning, decisively turning the tide of the war in the Pacific. The SBD-3 was the principal variant in service at Midway, with its distinctive perforated split dive flaps, rear gunner position, and rugged construction making it a reliable if unglamorous performer. This Hasegawa 1/72 kit captures the Dauntless faithfully with accurate airframe detail and USN carrier markings.
