The Grumman X-29 is one of the most visually arresting experimental aircraft ever built — a jet that flew with its wings swept forward rather than back, a configuration that aerodynamic theory said should be inherently unstable and uncontrollable. It was, and only a fly-by-wire computer system running at 40 times per second prevented it from instantly departing controlled flight. The reward for that complexity was extraordinary manoeuvrability data that informed fighter design for decades. Tested at NASA Dryden in the 1980s, the X-29 remains a landmark in experimental aviation and a uniquely eye-catching subject on any display shelf. Hasegawa's 1/72 kit captures every radical angle of this remarkable aircraft.
