The Nakajima J1N1-S Gekko ("Moonlight") began life as a twin-engine reconnaissance aircraft before a field modification in 1943 transformed it into a remarkably effective night fighter, armed with obliquely-mounted cannon that allowed attacks on B-29s from below without entering their defensive fire. The late production variant refined the armament and equipment fit as the Imperial Navy scrambled to defend the home islands from the relentless American bombing campaign. Hobby 2000's 1/72 kit captures the late Gekko with its distinctive twin-boom fuselage, accurate night fighter markings, and the atmospheric detail suited to this nocturnal combatant.
A fascinating and unusual subject for Japanese aviation or night fighter specialists.
