The Grumman TBF/TBM-1C Avenger was the torpedo bomber that turned the tide of the Pacific war, entering service just in time for Midway and going on to serve on every major carrier from Guadalcanal to Tokyo Bay. The -1C variant introduced two wing-mounted .50 calibre guns, giving it a genuine defensive punch alongside its torpedo or bomb load. Large, capable, and surprisingly rugged, the Avenger became the backbone of Allied carrier strike operations and served with the US Navy, Royal Navy, and RNZAF throughout the conflict.
