The Tauchpanzer ("diving tank") variants of the Panzer III and IV were developed in 1940 in preparation for Operation Sea Lion, the planned invasion of Britain, and were subsequently repurposed for Operation Barbarossa — crossing the River Bug at the start of the invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941. Sealed with waterproof compounds and fitted with a long snorkel, the Tauchpanzer IV could submerge to depths of 4–5 metres and cross rivers on the riverbed. Only a relatively small number were converted. This HobbyBoss 1/35 kit (80132) captures this unusual and rarely modelled submersible variant of the Panzer IV Ausf. D.
