The USS Gato (SS-212) was the lead boat of the Gato class, the most numerous and successful American submarine class of World War II. Commissioned in 1941, the Gato and her sister boats — eventually 77 submarines — formed the backbone of the Pacific submarine offensive that devastated Japanese merchant shipping, sinking over 5 million tons of shipping and over 200 warships. Gato herself made twelve war patrols, earning four battle stars. This HobbyBoss 1/350 kit (83523) captures the boat in her 1941 configuration before wartime modifications.
