As German anti-tank capability improved through 1942 and KV-1 losses mounted, Soviet designers introduced a simplified welded turret to speed production while maintaining protection. The simplified turret was cheaper and faster to manufacture than the earlier cast versions, and was applied from mid-1942 as the Soviets desperately increased output ahead of the major battles of 1942–43. The KV-1 was withdrawn from frontline heavy tank service in 1943 in favour of the KV-1S and ultimately the IS-2, but large numbers remained in use in secondary roles. This HobbyBoss 1/48 kit (84812) captures the simplified turret variant.
