The KV with "big turret" refers to a late KV-1 production variant featuring an enlarged, thicker cast turret that significantly increased frontal and side protection over earlier KV-1 turret designs. Introduced from 1942 as Soviet designers sought to maintain the KV's armour advantage over improving German anti-tank capability, the big turret added considerable weight to an already heavy vehicle. Despite its protective value, the additional weight contributed to the KV-1's replacement in the heavy tank role by the lighter and faster KV-1S and ultimately the IS series. This HobbyBoss 1/48 kit (84815) captures this important late KV-1 production variant.
