The M4A3(76)W combined the preferred Ford-engined M4A3 hull with the 76mm M1A2 gun and the wet ammo stowage system (the "W" suffix) that greatly reduced the Sherman's notorious propensity to catch fire when hit. The 76mm gun finally gave the Sherman a fighting chance against the Panther and Tiger at normal combat ranges, though it still struggled against the Tiger II frontally. This variant saw extensive service in Northwest Europe from autumn 1944, equipping armoured divisions in the Ardennes, the Rhineland, and the drive into Germany. This HobbyBoss 1/48 kit (84805) captures this important late-war Sherman variant.
