The M3 Grant was Britain's designation for the American M3 medium tank, modified to British Army specifications with a lower commander's turret and revised crew arrangements. When it arrived in North Africa with the 8th Army in 1942, the Grant's hull-mounted 75mm gun gave Commonwealth forces a weapon capable of knocking out German armour at combat range for the first time — a significant tactical shift at a critical point in the desert war. Robust, reliable, and available in numbers, the Grant bridged the gap between the undergunned Crusader era and the Sherman's arrival.
