A Polish workhorse with a life-saving role
IBG’s 1/48 scale kit depicts the single-seat PZL M18B Dromader in Polish firefighting service, bringing an unusual civilian subject to the modelling bench.
Historical background
Developed by PZL Mielec in Poland during the 1970s, the M18 Dromader first flew in 1976. Its design drew on the American Rockwell Thrush agricultural aircraft, combining that heritage with Polish engineering and a radial engine. The result was a rugged low-wing aircraft designed for demanding work close to the ground.
Although developed for agricultural duties, the Dromader also found an important role in aerial firefighting. Its ability to carry and release a substantial liquid load made it useful for attacking fires from the air, with operations supported by ground crews. The M18B continued the Dromader family’s development, and the aircraft became a distinctive part of Poland’s agricultural and firefighting aviation story.
