ORP Garland was a G-class destroyer transferred to the Polish Navy from the Royal Navy in 1940, one of the larger fleet destroyers that gave the Polish Navy a more capable and heavily armed vessel than the Hunt-class escorts. Garland participated in some of the most dangerous convoy operations of the war — including the Murmansk convoys to the Soviet Union where she suffered serious damage from air attack — and her story is one of extraordinary endurance under sustained operational pressure. In her 1944 configuration after repair and refit, Garland represents the Polish Navy's fleet destroyer capability at its most developed, and her G-class hull has a sleeker, more powerful presence than the compact Hunts.
