The Bedford QL Tanker carried fuel to the forward areas — the lifeblood of mechanised warfare that tanks, trucks, and aircraft all depended upon and which could never arrive in sufficient quantities. Fitted with a cylindrical tank body in place of the standard cargo bed, the QL Tanker was a common sight in the Royal Army Service Corps petrol companies that threaded their way up shell-cratered roads to refuel armoured formations that couldn't stop fighting long enough to come rearward for fuel. In the push through France and Belgium after D-Day, fuel supply became the limiting factor on the entire Allied advance — and the Bedford Tanker was at the sharp end of that problem.
The fuel truck that decided the pace of the advance — the most strategically important variant in the QL range.
