The Centaur was the Liberty-engined cousin of the Cromwell — essentially the same vehicle before the Meteor engine became available, and used extensively for training and in specialised roles where the Liberty's lower performance was acceptable. The Centaur Mk.IV mounted a 95mm howitzer in place of the standard 75mm gun, serving with the Royal Marine Armoured Support Group that landed with the first waves at Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches on D-Day, providing close fire support directly off landing craft. These were the only Centaurs to see combat in Europe, and their D-Day role makes the Mk.IV a historically significant and distinctive subject. IBG's 1/72 kit captures this specific close support variant with the short-barrelled howitzer that sets it apart from the gun-armed Cromwells it supported.
