The M13/40 corrected the M11/39's most glaring error by moving the main 47mm gun into the turret, creating a more conventional and effective tank that became the backbone of Italian armoured strength in North Africa. Late production vehicles incorporated combat-experience improvements to the suspension and engine cooling, and the M13/40 fought at Bardia, Tobruk, Gazala, and El Alamein — always at a disadvantage against British cruiser tanks and Matildas, but far more capable than the M11/39 it replaced. In Italian and captured Commonwealth markings it occupies an important place in the Western Desert story, and IBG's 1/72 kit captures the late production variant with the detail and accuracy the subject merits.
