As the Crusader became obsolete as a gun tank, the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers found a second life for its fast, reliable chassis as an anti-aircraft platform. The Crusader AA Mk.III mounted a single 40mm Bofors gun in a distinctive low-profile open turret, providing armoured formations with dedicated mobile air defence as Allied air supremacy over the battlefield grew from 1943 onwards. Fast enough to keep pace with the tanks it protected and carrying a weapon proven effective against low-flying aircraft, the Crusader AA was a neat and practical conversion that saw service in Italy and North-West Europe. An unusual and eye-catching variant that makes a striking addition to any British armour display.
