The Softcab Diamond T 968 with M2 Browning heavy machine gun represents the armed escort and convoy protection variant, with the fabric-roofed cab that gave the "softcab" designation and the .50 calibre M2 mounted for anti-aircraft and ground defence. Armed trucks in convoy escort roles were a practical solution to the threat from air attack and ambush, and the M2's devastating firepower made even a single gun truck a serious deterrent. The combination of the soft cab's slightly different silhouette and the M2 mounting makes this a distinctly different and more aggressive looking variant than the standard cargo truck.
