The 3Ro with 100mm Howitzer 100/17 mounted an infantry support howitzer in the truck bed, providing Italian formations with mobile indirect fire capability that could accompany the advance and provide on-call artillery support without the delays inherent in towed artillery. The 100/17 was Italy's standard infantry support howitzer and the combination with the 3Ro chassis created a practical self-propelled artillery vehicle suited to the mobile operations of the North African campaign. The howitzer's shorter barrel and different breech arrangement give this variant a noticeably different profile from the 90/53 gun truck, creating a distinct subject within the 3Ro artillery family.
