The M11/39 was Italy's medium tank at the start of the North African campaign — a deeply flawed design with its main 37mm gun in the hull and only machine guns in the turret, placing the primary armament where it couldn't traverse. Despite this fundamental weakness, M11/39s fought in the initial Italian offensives against Egypt in 1940 and were captured in large numbers during Operation Compass, Wavell's brilliant counter-offensive that destroyed the Italian 10th Army in two months. The captured M11/39s were used by the Australians, making this one of the few tanks to fight under both Italian and Commonwealth colours in the desert war. An unusual and historically intriguing subject.
