The Toldi I was Hungary's light tank of the early war period, a Swedish Landsverk L-60 design licence-built by Manfréd Weiss in Budapest and serving with the Royal Hungarian Army from 1940. Named after the legendary Hungarian knight Miklós Toldi, it was armed with a 20mm autocannon and served on the Eastern Front alongside German forces, participating in the invasion of Yugoslavia and the early stages of Barbarossa. Lightly armoured and increasingly outclassed as the war progressed, the Toldi I nevertheless represents the peak of Hungary's pre-war armoured ambitions and a fascinating subject from one of Europe's lesser-modelled Second World War participants.
An unusual and historically interesting Eastern European subject for minor Axis or Eastern Front specialists.
