The 37mm gun-armed Type 94 variant gave the tankette a more meaningful anti-armour capability than the standard machine gun armament, though the installation required significant modification to the small hull. This armed variant represents the Japanese Army's constant effort to improve the combat effectiveness of its tankette fleet without the resources to design and build entirely new vehicles. In the confined jungle terrain of South-East Asia and the Pacific islands, even a small 37mm gun provided useful fire support, and the Type 94 in this configuration served across the IJA's entire operational theatre. A niche but historically genuine variant for Japanese armour specialists.
