The BTR-4E fitted with slat armour adds cage-type RPG protection around the hull and turret, a practical and widely used expedient that significantly reduces the effectiveness of rocket-propelled grenades by causing the shaped charge to detonate prematurely before penetrating the main armour. Slat armour has been widely fitted to Ukrainian BTR-4Es in operational service and has become almost synonymous with the vehicle's appearance in combat photographs. The slat cage gives the model a heavier, more battle-ready appearance than the unarmoured variant and represents the vehicle as it is actually seen in service today.
