The Mortar Carrier variant of the Universal Carrier was adapted to carry and fire the 3-inch mortar from the vehicle, providing infantry units with mobile indirect fire support that could keep pace with the carrier platoons. The mortar and its baseplate were carried in the fighting compartment, with ammunition stowed wherever it would fit, and the vehicle's armour gave the crew some protection while the mortar was set up on the ground nearby. A specialist variant that tells the story of how the Universal Carrier's versatile chassis was pressed into every conceivable infantry support role — the Carrier as a mobile mortar platform rather than just a Bren-gun carrier.
