The Maultier — literally "mule" — was the German Army's solution to the appalling road conditions of the Eastern Front, where wheeled vehicles became hopelessly bogged in the mud and snow that made normal truck operations impossible. By fitting the rear axle assembly of a Bren carrier or Sd.Kfz.3 half-track to the rear of a Ford or Opel truck chassis, the Germans produced a semi-tracked vehicle that could haul supplies where ordinary trucks could not follow.
