The Handley Page Hampden was one of Bomber Command's original front-line aircraft at the outbreak of war — part of the trio of "heavies" alongside the Wellington and Whitley that bore the burden of RAF bombing operations in the early years before the Lancaster arrived. The Hampden's distinctive narrow fuselage, which gave crews barely enough room to pass each other inside, and its twin-fin tail gave it an immediately recognisable silhouette, and it served in the torpedo bomber role with Coastal Command as well as in Bomber Command until replaced by more capable types. ICM's 1/48 Hampden fills a genuine and long-standing gap in the RAF bomber market, providing a detailed and accurate model of a type that has been neglected by most manufacturers.
The narrow bomber — the Hampden B.Mk.I that flew in the dark alongside the Wellington and Whitley before the Lancaster took over.
