The Lockheed Hudson was Britain's first American-built aircraft to see operational service in the Second World War — a military development of the Lockheed Model 14 Super Electra airliner that the RAF's purchasing commission selected in 1938 as an urgent replacement for the ageing Avro Anson in the maritime patrol role. In Coastal Command service the Hudson flew anti-submarine patrols over the Atlantic and North Sea, making the type's name in February 1940 when a Hudson became the first RAF aircraft to capture a German U-boat — U-570 — which was forced to the surface and surrendered. The Mk. IV and V variants introduced more powerful Twin Wasp engines and improved equipment fits.
