The Lockheed C-141 Starlifter was the USAF Military Airlift Command's workhorse strategic transport for three decades — the aircraft that transformed America's ability to project military power anywhere on the globe within hours rather than days. Entering service in 1965, the C-141A could carry 154 troops or 62,000 lb of cargo across intercontinental ranges, and it served in every major American military operation from Vietnam to Desert Storm. Its distinctive high-wing, T-tail configuration and four TF33 turbofan engines give it a graceful, purposeful appearance that belies its size. The Starlifter became so essential to US military logistics that the entire fleet was later stretched by inserting a fuselage plug to create the C-141B, effectively adding the equivalent of 90 extra aircraft to the inventory without building a single new airframe.
