The Cessna UC-78 Bobcat — nicknamed “Bamboo Bomber” by the aircrew who flew it — was the US Army Air Forces’ primary twin-engine advanced trainer of the Second World War, used to transition pilots from single-engine types to the multi-engine aircraft they would fly in combat. Constructed partly of wood and fabric over a steel tube frame, the Bobcat was economical to produce and easy to maintain, with over 5,000 built. It served across the globe in the training role, and the familiar twin-boom tail silhouette became a common sight at USAAF training bases throughout the war.
