The Hawker Tempest Mk.V entered RAF service in early 1944 as the fastest low-altitude fighter in the inventory, built around the powerful Napier Sabre II engine. “At War” covers the Tempest in its operational wartime schemes — the standard Day Fighter camouflage of dark green and ocean grey that carried the type through the V-1 campaign, the Normandy invasion, and the offensive operations over Germany in 1944–45. The Tempest destroyed more V-1 flying bombs than any other aircraft type and claimed significant numbers of Luftwaffe jets in the final months of the war, making it one of the unsung heroes of the RAF’s late-war strength.
