The Kawasaki Otsu-1 — also known by its Salmsons-derived designation Sal.2 A2 — was one of the earliest aircraft operated by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service, a licence-built French reconnaissance biplane produced in Japan during the early 1920s. A rare and genuinely obscure subject, the Otsu-1 represents the very beginning of Japanese military aviation’s independent development, before Japan’s own design bureaux produced the types that would dominate the Pacific War two decades later. An unusual choice for the serious collector of early aviation and Imperial Japanese subjects.
