The Lavochkin La-5UTI was the two-seat dual-control trainer variant of the La-5 fighter, produced to convert Soviet pilots onto the type’s demanding handling characteristics before they flew the single-seat combat version. With a second cockpit inserted ahead of the standard position and dual controls fitted, the La-5UTI retained the La-5’s basic airframe and engine but sacrificed some armament. Training Soviet fighter pilots on a type as powerful as the La-5 required a dedicated conversion aircraft, and the UTI filled that role on the Eastern Front from 1943.
