Kharkiv — Ukraine's second city — was the target of Russian forces in the opening phase of the 2022 full-scale invasion, and the city's defence became one of the defining early actions of the war. Unlike Mariupol, Kharkiv held: Ukrainian forces repelled the assault on the city itself, and by May 2022 had pushed Russian forces back from the urban area entirely. Master Box's figure captures a Ukrainian defender of this campaign in the equipment and urban warfare kit of the Kharkiv battle — body armour, helmet, and weapons configured for street fighting in a major European city.
