Matchbox 1/700 Admiral Graf Spee (PK-161)

The Admiral Graf Spee was a German “pocket battleship” — officially a Panzerschiff, or armoured ship — designed to exploit the limitations imposed by the Treaty of Versailles while still packing the firepower of a cruiser in a relatively compact hull. In the first months of the Second World War she operated as a commerce raider in the South Atlantic and Indian Ocean, sinking nine Allied merchant ships before being cornered by a British cruiser squadron at the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939. Badly damaged and cornered in the neutral port of Montevideo, her captain Hans Langsdorff chose to scuttle her rather than risk his crew in a breakout against a British force he believed to be far larger than it was. The wreck remains on the seabed of the Río de la Plata to this day.
