The Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress was the definitive variant of America's most iconic heavy bomber of the Second World War — the version that flew the great daylight precision bombing campaigns over Nazi Germany with the Eighth Air Force from bases in England. The G model introduced the chin turret to address the head-on attack tactics that had devastated earlier B-17 formations, bringing the total defensive armament to thirteen .50 calibre machine guns. Flying in tight combat boxes designed for mutual fire support, B-17G crews faced some of the most dangerous operational conditions of the entire war: the missions to Schweinfurt and Regensburg in 1943 resulted in loss rates that were unsustainable, yet the crews returned. Over 8,000 B-17Gs were built — more than any other variant — and their legacy defines the entire concept of strategic bombing.
Thirteen guns, ten men, and the most dangerous skies in the world — the B-17G over Germany.
