Matchbox 1/72 Messerschmitt 110 (PK-115)

The Messerschmitt Bf 110 Zerstörer — "Destroyer" — was conceived as the Luftwaffe's long-range heavy fighter, designed to escort bombers and clear the skies of enemy aircraft through sheer firepower. It performed this role well enough over Poland and France, but suffered badly during the Battle of Britain when it encountered single-engine RAF fighters and proved insufficiently manoeuvrable to defend itself. Withdrawn from daylight escort duties, the Bf 110 was reassigned to night fighting and ground attack, roles in which it excelled for the remainder of the war — the radar-equipped Bf 110G night fighter becoming one of the Luftwaffe's most effective defensive weapons against the RAF's night bombing offensive over Germany.
