Matchbox 1/72 Messerschmitt Me410.A2/U4 (PK-113)

The Messerschmitt Me 410 Hornisse was the Luftwaffe's attempt to produce a fast, capable heavy fighter and destroyer aircraft to replace the troubled Me 210, and in the A-2/U4 variant it was armed with one of the most formidable weapons fitted to a twin-engine aircraft in the war: a 50mm BK 5 cannon designed to destroy Allied heavy bombers with a single hit. The Me 410 saw extensive service over Germany in 1943–44 as the Luftwaffe sought to break up the Allied daylight bombing offensive, and the U4 heavy cannon variant represented the most extreme expression of the Zerstörer concept. By mid-1944, however, the type was being outclassed by the escorting P-51 Mustangs and rapidly withdrawn from front-line service.
