The Vickers Wellington was the backbone of RAF Bomber Command in the early years of the Second World War — a twin-engine medium bomber of remarkable structural toughness thanks to Barnes Wallis's geodetic airframe construction, which allowed it to absorb extraordinary battle damage and still return home. The Mk.X was the most produced variant, powered by Bristol Hercules radial engines that gave improved performance over the earlier Pegasus-engined marks, and it served not only as a night bomber over Germany but also in anti-submarine patrol, torpedo bombing, and transport roles. By the time the Wellington was finally withdrawn from front-line bombing in 1943 it had served in every theatre and laid the foundations of experience that the four-engine heavies — Lancaster, Halifax, Stirling — would build upon.
The geodetic marvel that held Bomber Command together in its darkest years.
