The M4A3 (76)W was the US Army's most effective Sherman variant — combining the Ford V8 engine preferred by American crews with the high-velocity 76mm gun that finally gave the Sherman adequate firepower against German medium and heavy armour at reasonable combat ranges, along with the wet ammunition stowage (the “W” in the designation) that dramatically reduced the catastrophic ammunition fires that had earned earlier Shermans their grim nickname. It entered service in time for the Normandy campaign and served through to the end of the war in Europe.
