The SOMUA S35 was arguably the best tank on the Western Front in 1940 — better armoured and better armed than most German tanks it faced, a fact that made its defeat alongside the rest of the French Army all the more bitter. The problem was not the tank but the doctrine: French armour was parcelled out to support infantry rather than concentrated for decisive operations, and superior individual vehicles were overwhelmed by inferior opponents used with superior method. Meng's World War Toons gives the S35's distinctive cast hull and rounded turret the chibi treatment, resulting in one of the series' most charming subjects.
